Can AI Really Write a Good CV? Why Human Expertise Still Wins

AI vs Human CV Writing

"I know, I can use AI to write a CV for me!"

Ah, AI. A pioneering and revolutionary technological concept that dates back to the days of WW2, AI is now becoming an increasingly prevalent part of our lives. Whether you use it to compose a professional sounding work email or create an avatar of yourself to look like a Simpsons character, it seems that the majority use of AI seems almost inevitable.

So, if AI is a helpful and intelligent tool, that means you can use it to write an effective CV for you in seconds, right?

Well, sort of?! You can choose to write a CV using ChatGPT and some of the results are ok as a starting point; however, a CV written using artificial intelligence will never replace something that has been through the eyes, brain and ears of a human being.

Like many consulting or helping professions, it is likely that AI is never going to be able to produce the same results as a professionally crafted CV. In the AI-written CVs that I have seen, there can be an absence in the richness that comes when a human being utilises their capacity to analyse an individual alongside the requirements of an organisation and to convey this effectively on the page.

AI does have its place in the recruitment process. We know in the CV writing world that the use of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) is becoming more commonplace, with up to 97% of large corporate organisations using the tool. However, its use is not perfect and sometimes due to the imperfect, robotic and overly general nature of ATS, it can mean that viable and valuable candidates are overlooked because their CV is not formatted ‘correctly’ or is one page too long.

As a CV writer, I do not use AI. My stance is that if my clients have requested my services as an experienced and skilled writer, they are paying me to apply this expertise and work dynamically and directly with them to achieve their desired results. This symbiotic relationship is just not possible with Artificial Intelligence. So rest assured that I will tussle and toy with words until you are confident the CV sounds like you and that you can substantiate every word at interview.
